In an active plumbing emergency, the repair is the easy part. What determines the size of the bill is how fast the water stops.
1. Stop the water at the nearest valve
Toilets and sinks have their own shut-off. If you cannot reach one or it will not close, go to the main valve. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
2. Kill power to affected areas
If water is near outlets, a panel, or a water heater's electrical connection, shut that circuit off before you step into the water.
3. Stop using every fixture on a backup
During a sewer backup, every flush and every load of laundry adds to what comes up. Stop running water entirely until the line is clear.
4. Call and describe what you see
Tell us where the water is coming from, what you have already shut off, and whether it is clean or waste water. That determines what we bring and how fast we need to be there.
If you smell gas, leave the building first, do not touch switches, and call from outside.
